Megan reflects on how she has overcome an unstable start in life to build her confidence, find employment and take her first steps towards a career.
I am now 20 years old and have been receiving support from St Basils since I was 18.
My childhood and early teenage years were, for the most part, very unstable, and I felt full of disappointment. When I reached out to St Basils, I had just left a very unhealthy and emotionally demanding relationship. I was unsure whether anyone would listen to me or what help and support was available, and I was reluctant to seek help.
However, discovering St Basils has saved my emotional development in a lot of ways.
They supported me finding somewhere to stay and provided food vouchers when I was struggling. Having that support helped me to get back on my feet.
Through EveryYouth Employed, I was able to access employment support from St Basils when I wanted to work again. My support worker encouraged me to explore my ambitions. They put my name forward for job opportunities that suited me and helped me take steps towards my career goals which was to work in care or the NHS.
In the short-term, I got a job at a TikTok logistics warehouse. With guidance and support from the employability team, I was able to move into a new property with other working young people. This has given me the opportunity to save, gain further independence and still have access to the support when I need it.
More recently, I was interviewed and successfully recruited as a care assistant in elderly care – something I have wanted to do since I was a young girl.
I see St Basils as more of a family than it simple being the staff’s job to help. I am thankful for everything they have done for me and for the way they have supported me. They will be an organisation I will be grateful for now and in years to come.
