After arriving in the UK, Mulu found support through EveryYouth’s Delivery Partner, 1625 Independent People. Today, he reflects on his journey:
My name is Mulu. I came to the UK from Ethiopia when I was 15 years old with my best friend. I didn’t want to go to war.
Back home, my older brother used to look after me. Coming to the UK was a long and difficult journey. My best friend died on the way. I haven’t seen my mum and dad since leaving Ethiopia. It was a hard journey for me.

When I arrived in the UK, I found out about 1625 Indepdendent People through my Personal Advisor. That’s when I met my work coach. My work coach is like family, like an older sister. She is very motivating.
I received support to help me with applying for college, completing job applications and preparing my CV. I completed my Functional Skills Maths Level 2 and English Level 1. Last year, I also successfully secured a job. Through EveryYouth Employed, I applied for Boost funding, which paid for a jacket and trousers for work.
When I’m not working, I really enjoy ice skating and playing football. It’s something that makes me very happy.
“Having someone there to help me has made a big difference.”
If I could say something to another young person who is in a similar situation, I would tell them to accept the help that is available. Living in the UK was hard at first, but I’ve met new people, built my confidence and started thinking about what I want for my future.
Now, I want to use my experiences to do something positive. I have applied to study Health and Social Care because I would like to become a social worker. I just want to help people and give back to people.
With support from 1625 Independent People and EveryYouth Employed, I’m working, planning my next steps in education and looking forward to building my future. But I will always remember the support I’ve received to help me get to where I am.
